How Liu Bang Escaped the Hongmen Banquet While Xiang Yu Let Him Go
The swords were already out at the banquet, and Liu Bang had to find a path to life between Xiang Yu, Fan Zeng, and Xiang Zhuang.
In the last episode, Liu Bang entered Xianyang first and won Guanzhong goodwill with the Three-Point Agreement. But he had hardly begun to enjoy that advantage before Xiang Yu's vast army reached the pass.
Then the truly dangerous moment arrived.
Xiang Yu Saw Liu Bang's Banner at the Pass and Burned With Anger
Xiang Yu believed that the greatest military credit in the destruction of Qin belonged to him. He had fought the great northern battle, broken Wang Li, and received Zhang Han's submission.
Then he reached Hangu Pass and saw not Qin banners, but Liu Bang's.
Worse still, he learned that Liu Bang had sealed the pass against other forces from the east.
To Xiang Yu, this looked like a direct attempt to keep Guanzhong for himself. He attacked the pass and forced his way through.
Xiang Bo Moved First Because of Zhang Liang
Before the banquet, it was Xiang Bo who panicked first.
His concern was not Liu Bang but Zhang Liang, with whom he had personal ties. If Xiang Yu struck hard the next day, Zhang Liang would also be destroyed.
So Xiang Bo slipped into Liu Bang's camp at night and warned him.
That warning gave Liu Bang one narrow opening.
Liu Bang's First Weapon Was Submission
When Liu Bang heard the news, he did not begin by preparing battle. He began by pleading.
He insisted that he had no intention of stealing Guanzhong from Xiang Yu. He said he had sealed the pass only to prevent chaos and to protect what would later be handed over. He offered kinship and gifts and asked Xiang Bo to speak for him.
This did not remove the danger, but it softened one channel around Xiang Yu.
Fan Zeng Saw the Threat More Clearly Than Xiang Yu
Fan Zeng understood the situation at once.
He saw that Liu Bang, once known for greed and loose living, had changed after entering Guanzhong. A man who could restrain himself, gather local feeling, and present modest language at the right moment was not a minor threat.
In Fan Zeng's eyes, such a man had to be killed while the chance still existed.
At the Banquet, Liu Bang Knelt Fast and Xiang Yu Softened Fast
Liu Bang entered with only Zhang Liang beside him. Before taking a seat, he knelt and repeated his submission.
He spoke of loyalty, waiting, and obedience. Xiang Yu, who often reacted strongly to humility and boldness alike, began to soften.
That softening was precisely what Fan Zeng feared.
Xiang Zhuang Danced With a Sword, but Xiang Bo Shielded the Blow
When persuasion failed, Fan Zeng arranged another path. Xiang Zhuang entered under the pretense of a sword dance but aimed more and more directly toward Liu Bang.
At the crucial moment, Xiang Bo rose too and joined the dance. His movements blocked Xiang Zhuang again and again.
That interference bought Liu Bang another few breaths.
Fan Kuai's Entrance Helped Break the Killing Atmosphere
Outside, Zhang Liang understood the danger and called for Fan Kuai.
Fan Kuai burst into the tent armed and furious, forcing his way through the guards. Xiang Yu, instead of striking him down, admired his physical courage and gave him wine and meat.
Then Fan Kuai defended Liu Bang openly, arguing that Liu Bang had entered Guanzhong without plundering it and had moved against the cruel Qin rather than against Xiang Yu's interests.
Those words further weakened the will to kill inside the tent.
The Strange Truth Is That Xiang Yu Had Chances but Could Not Finish It
That is what makes the Hongmen Banquet so consequential.
There were many chances to kill Liu Bang.
From the sword dance to the tense pauses that followed, Xiang Yu needed only to harden himself once. He never quite did.
He wanted Liu Bang humbled. He wanted him obedient. But he could not bring himself to order an immediate execution under those conditions.
Liu Bang Escaped on the Pretext of Leaving Briefly
Once the mood loosened, Zhang Liang seized the moment. Liu Bang used the excuse of stepping out and did not return.
He rode away by a side path with trusted men rather than in an official carriage, fearing attention.
Zhang Liang remained to smooth the situation and later returned with gifts and apologies after estimating that Liu Bang was already safely distant.
Fan Zeng knew at once that the chance had been lost.
The Banquet Ended, but the Real Struggle Only Deepened
Liu Bang returned alive and immediately killed the informer Cao Wushang, cutting off a dangerous loose end.
But surviving the banquet did not mean he had won anything yet.
Xiang Yu's army was still there, and Xiang Yu would soon enter Guanzhong himself.
The question now was no longer whether Liu Bang could save his life for one night.
It was whether Xiang Yu, once at the height of power, knew how to keep the world he had won.
In the next episode, we follow his great settlement of the realm and how, even at the height of success, he began turning allies into future enemies.
