Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, died after falling ill during an imperial tour in 210 BCE. The surviving account does not identify the disease or establish a precise medical cause.

He died at Shaqiu, away from the Qin capital. Stories that mercury elixirs killed him are possible speculation, not a diagnosis supported by the surviving account.

What Happened on His Final Journey?

The emperor was travelling through his empire on his fifth inspection tour. According to Sima Qian's Shiji (Records of the Grand Historian), he became ill at Pingyuanjin and died later at Shaqiu. Sima Qian wrote more than a century after the event, so his narrative is an important historical account rather than an eyewitness medical report.

As the illness worsened, the Shiji says, the emperor sealed a letter telling his son Fusu to meet the funeral procession and bury him at Xianyang. The letter had not yet been sent when the emperor died.

Did Mercury Poisoning Kill Qin Shi Huang?

We do not know. Qin Shi Huang sought ways to prolong life, and mercury is associated with later Chinese alchemical practices. But the account of his final illness does not say that mercury caused it. His interest in immortality alone cannot establish what he consumed or why he died.

The same caution applies to claims that he was murdered. The intrigue that followed his death does not by itself prove an assassination.

Why Was His Death Kept Secret?

The Shiji says Chancellor Li Si feared that news of the emperor's death far from the capital could cause unrest. The party therefore concealed the death while travelling back to Xianyang. The account also describes carts of salted fish being used to mask the smell from the emperor's carriage.

This is Sima Qian's account of the court's actions; its detailed conversations and motives cannot be independently checked from that narrative alone.

Who Succeeded Him?

According to the Shiji, the official Zhao Gao and Li Si helped place the emperor's younger son Hu Hai on the throne. They altered the succession instructions and sent orders that led Fusu to take his own life. Hu Hai became Qin Er Shi, the Second Emperor.

The succession crisis was followed by rebellion. The Qin dynasty fell only a few years later, although its collapse had causes beyond the emperor's death.
